Independent bathroom remodeling referral publisher
How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take in Grand Rapids?
Once construction starts, a bathroom remodel that keeps the same layout usually takes three to five calendar weeks, and a complex one with moved plumbing, custom tile or special-order materials often takes seven to twelve. Design decisions, permits and material orders come before that clock starts. Grand Rapids Bath Pros is a referral publisher: it does no remodeling work and sets no schedules.

How long does a bathroom remodel take once work starts?
A construction-code reference guide published in March 2026 puts a typical bathroom remodel at 3 to 8 weeks once construction starts. It splits that into two honest bands:
- Simple remodel, same layout, standard fixtures: 15 to 25 working days of construction, which usually becomes 3 to 5 calendar weeks because trades do not always work back to back.
- Complex remodel (moved plumbing, custom tile, shower glass, framing repairs, electrical upgrades or special-order materials): 35 to 60 working days, often 7 to 12 calendar weeks, "especially in older homes."
| Phase | Typical duration | What sets the pace |
|---|---|---|
| Planning and design | 2 to 6 weeks | How fast every selection is made and ordered |
| Permits and trade scheduling | 1 to 3 weeks | Local permit review and lining up each trade |
| Demolition | 2 to 5 days | Old tile, plaster and heavy tubs; what is found behind the walls |
| Rough-in (plumbing, electrical, framing) | 1 to 2 weeks | Inspections before walls can close |
| Waterproofing and tile | 1 to 2 weeks | Cure times and tile complexity |
| Finishes and fixtures | About 1 week | Custom glass and tops measured after tile |

Be careful comparing quotes, because companies count different things. A Pacific Northwest design-build firm's FAQ puts a focused guest-bath update at 2 to 4 months and a large primary bath with layout changes at 6 to 9 months or more (Neil Kelly FAQ, updated June 24, 2026, retrieved 2026-10-08). The page does not say whether those figures include design and ordering time. Ask any company what its timeline covers: construction days only, or design, permits and ordering as well.

What has to happen before construction can start?
Two clocks run before anyone opens a wall, and they decide the finish date as much as the crew does.
Design and selections: about 2 to 6 weeks. The same guide puts planning for a simple remodel at 10 to 15 business days if you already know the look you want, and 4 to 6 weeks for a complex one, because moving a toilet, converting a tub to a shower or adding a curbless shower touches framing, drains, vents, electrical, waterproofing and inspections. It lists tile, vanities and specialty fixtures among schedule-critical items, and puts custom sizes, special finishes, imported tile and made-to-order cabinetry at 4 to 12 weeks of lead time.
Permits and scheduling: about 1 to 3 weeks. In Grand Rapids, the City says a residential building permit is needed to remodel or repair a single-family home or two-family duplex, and that electrical, mechanical or plumbing permits may also be required. A soil erosion control permit is needed within 500 feet of a lake, river, stream or open drain. The City recommends that homeowners pulling their own permit apply in person; licensed contractors can use any method.

Applying while materials are on order lets the permit clock and the delivery clock run together instead of one after the other.
The fees for those permits are laid out on the bid-comparison worksheet, which also has a row for who pulls the permits.

Why can an older Grand Rapids house take longer?
American Community Survey data for 2020 to 2024 puts 15.3 percent of Grand Rapids metro homes at pre-1939 construction and 23.2 percent at 1940 to 1969, so about 38.5 percent of homes were built before 1970. The timeline guide calls out exactly what those bathrooms tend to hide:
- Slower demolition. Mud-set tile, plaster walls, cast iron tubs, multiple flooring layers and old mortar beds push complex demolition to 4 to 7 working days.
- Repairs before rebuilding. A rotten subfloor, a slow shower leak or framing damage can add 1 to 5 days. Minor water-damage repairs may add 1 to 3 days; larger ones can add a week or more.
- Inspection corrections. If a rough-in inspection needs a correction, the trade returns and the inspection is booked again: 2 to 5 days for minor fixes, 1 to 2 weeks if the repair affects framing, plumbing access or another room.
Sources: Census ACS 2020 to 2024 figures as published on this site's bathroom remodel cost page; Jaspector timeline guide, retrieved 2026-10-08. Under the City's FY2027 fee schedule, a plumbing permit application includes one inspection and each additional inspection is $42 (City of Grand Rapids FY2027 fee schedule, PDF, retrieved 2026-10-04).
None of this is a reason to avoid an older house. It is a reason to ask, before signing, how the company prices and schedules what it finds behind the walls.

Can you finish a bathroom remodel before the holidays?
Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026, and Christmas on December 25. Here is what the published ranges above imply if you start the conversation in early or mid October. This is arithmetic, not a promise; a company's actual backlog is the one number you cannot see from outside.
- Same-layout remodel with in-stock materials: 10 to 15 business days of planning if your selections are quick, 1 to 3 weeks for permits and scheduling, then 3 to 5 weeks of construction. Thanksgiving is tight at best; Christmas is realistic if decisions are made in October and nothing is special order.
- Complex remodel: 4 to 6 weeks of planning plus 7 to 12 weeks of construction runs past both holidays. Add 1 to 3 weeks for permits and scheduling and a complex job started in October points to a finish somewhere between January and March; use the fall to make every selection so the construction weeks are not spent waiting.
- Anything with custom glass or stone: shower glass usually cannot be measured until tile is done, and fabrication takes 7 to 14 days after measurement, so it lands at the very end of the schedule.
If the bathroom you are remodeling is the only one in the house, raise that at the estimate stage. Ask which days it will be out of service and whether a toilet or shower can be kept working between phases.
If your project is a tub-to-shower conversion, see the tub-to-shower conversion page for what that scope involves.

What should you ask a company about the schedule?
A company that cannot answer these clearly before you sign is unlikely to answer them clearly mid-project:
- What does your timeline cover? Construction days only, or design, permits and ordering too?
- What is the start date, and how many working days on site? Get both in writing; the bid-comparison worksheet has a row for each.
- When will you apply for permits, and who pulls them? Ideally while materials are on order, not after demolition.
- Which items are special order, and what are their lead times? Ask to have long-lead items ordered before demolition starts.
- How do you handle what is found behind the walls? Ask how hidden conditions are priced and how many days they usually add in houses like yours.
- What happens if an inspection needs a correction? Who books the re-inspection, and who pays for it?
Before hiring, check the company's Michigan license yourself; the Grand Rapids license list from LARA is a starting point, and the buyer’s guide covers the rest of the hiring checklist.

Common questions about bathroom remodel timelines in Grand Rapids
How long does a small bathroom remodel take?
If the layout stays the same and fixtures are standard, the published guide above puts construction at 15 to 25 working days, usually 3 to 5 calendar weeks, after planning and permits.
Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Grand Rapids?
The City says remodeling or repairing a single-family home or duplex needs a residential building permit, and electrical, mechanical or plumbing permits may also apply. Ask the company which permits your scope needs and who will pull them.
What usually delays a bathroom remodel?
Late or damaged materials, hidden water damage, permit and inspection timing, changes after work begins, trade availability and custom fabrication such as shower glass or stone tops.
Why do two companies quote such different timelines?
Often because they are counting different things: one quotes working days on site, another quotes calendar weeks including design, permits and ordering. Ask each one to say what its number covers.
Can I shorten the timeline?
The most reliable way is to finish every selection and order long-lead items before demolition, and to avoid changes after rough-in, when a moved valve or niche can mean redoing waterproofing and tile.
